Une perspective française sur l’avenir de l’Union Européenne
Le 13 mars 2015, les Franco-British Connections ont organisé une conférence en présence de S.E. l’Ambassadeur de France au Royaume-Uni, Madame Sylvie Bermann. La discussion a été présidé par le Prof Maurice Fraser, Directeur du LSE European Insitute. Cet événement a été conjointement organisé avec la LSE French society et la LSE European society, avec le généreux soutien du LSE European Institute ainsi que du Franco-British Council.
Plus de 120 étudiants de la LSE, du King’s College, de UCL et d’Oxford ont assisté à cet événement public qui s’est déroulé dans le Wolfson Theatre de la London School of Economics (LSE).
Madame Sylvie Bermann a développé la position de la France sur la crise économique en zone euro ainsi que sur la relation UE-Russie. Débutant son propos par un retour historique sur les origines de l’Union européenne, en soulignant le rôle joué par la période de paix consécutive à Seconde guerre mondiale, Madame l’Ambassadeur a souhaité souligner l’importance des problématiques économiques aujourd’hui et la volonté de a France de jouer un rôle actif en matière de coordination européenne. Elle a également mis en valeur l’importance de l’EU comme acteur sur la scène internationale, l’UE étant la première puissance économique dans le monde, dont la parole est entendue.
Le Prof Fraser a ensuite proposé quelques réflexions plus générales du point de vue européen, tout en intégrant une perspective britannique. Plus particulièrement, il a défendu l’idée d’une relation d’étroite coopération entre la France et le Royaume-uni, tant du point de vue des objectifs que de la vision de l’UE, en dépit de divergences spécifiques à certaines questions institutionnelles. Enfin, il a souhaité faire part de son optimisme quant à la question d’un éventuel référendum sur l’appartenance du Royaume-Uni à l’UE.
Pour conclure, de nombreux étudiants ont eu l’opportunité de poser directement des questions à l’Ambassadeur, durant une séance d’échange avec le public.
A French Perspective on the Future of the European Union
On the 13th of March 2015, the Franco-British Connections organised a public discussion with special guest H.E. Mrs Sylvie Bermann, Ambassador of France to the UK. This event was chaired by Prof Maurice Fraser, Head of the LSE European Institute. This event was jointly with the LSE French society and the LSE European society, with the kind support of the LSE European Institute and the Franco-British Council.
Over 120 students from the LSE, King’s College, UCL and Oxford attended this public event that took place in the Wolfson Theatre of the London School of Economics (LSE).
Mrs Sylvie Bermann developed France’s position on the Eurozone economic crisis and the EU-Russia relationship. Starting with the historical foundations of the European Union, with particular emphasis on post World War peace, she highlighted the importance today of more economic concerns, and the will of France to play an active role in European progress in these areas. She also commented on the importance of the EU in international relations; together the EU is the largest economic unit in the world and is listened too.
Prof Fraser offered further comments from a European-wide but also British perspective. In particular, he shared his reading that France and Britain were today closer than ever before in terms of objectives and path forward for the EU, despite disagreements by some sectors of the public opinion with regard to the institutions of the Union. He expressed his optimism regarding the outcome of a potential referendum in the UK if there was to be one.
Many students then had the chance to directly ask questions to the Ambassador during a Q&A session.
